In Galveston for the weekend, and what do we find but a new place (for us) to try a margarita. The Spot is really Island Famous that offers five venues – The Spot,Tiki Bar, SideYard, RumShack, and Squeeze.
Boasting 50+ types of tequila, the interior near the bar offers a few booths and tables and an outdoor courtyard.
A Friday night in Galveston about 6:30pm is normally not a good time to get a table. This particular evening we walked in and picked from two emply booths and several tables inside, but the patio was full.
The Squeeze House Rita is a typical margarita worth $5.50 for a 12 oz glass. We give it 2 ½ margarita glasses. The Hand Shaken Top Shelf Rita made with 1800 Reposado Tequila and Cointreau is better, with a 3 margarita glass rating. With so many margaritas to choose from, we tried a few more.
Our server said the Margarita Italiana is a popular drink. Made with Milagro, Grand Marnier, Amaretto Dissaronno, and a splash of orange juice, we gave the heavy on the amaretto drink 2 ½ margarita glasses.
With many tequilas on the menu, we requested a tequila flight to find our pick. Don Julio Real was not available. Abandon the flight, and try Dulce Vida Grapefruit with a slice of orange. While grapefruit is not a favorite, this was pleasant to sip with the sweet orange. We give the grapefruit tequila shot 3 ½ margarita glasses.
By far, the best choice of the evening was the Margarita Sunrise. Made with Herradura Reposado and Grand Marnier, the combo of orange and cranberry juices was very good. A perfect beach drink, we give this margarita 4 margarita glasses. With a garnish and a splash more of tequila, it might rank a higher rating.
We enjoyed the many options available at Squeeze. There are a few more selections on the menu that may bring us back on a sunny day, if only to try the Margarita Sunrise again.
